“Yeah, okay.”

“Yeah. okay?” Chief Southwell mocked, a significant portion of his kindness fading.

“Sorry, chief. I mean, yes, I understand.”

“I’m not entirely sure that you do, at least, not yet. Just, do me a favor: think about that when you have the urge to share some of that information. My advice: don’t. Give it directly to the lieutenant. Or to me. It’s an election year for the governor, and things are tense right now. He’s running on controlling the cartel, as he always does, but he’s getting tons of pressure. Got some well-funded young guys vying for his spot. Even after fifty years, the guy still has to scratch and claw. He takes good care of us. We can’t be the reason he doesn’t stay there. Get it?”

“Understood,” Darius replied.

“Alright. Anyway, hey, nice to have you, Anderson. Be safe out there.”

Darius sat quietly in the passenger seat, struggling to make sense of exactly what Chief Southwell told him, his distance impossible for Sam to ignore.

“You okay, hero?” he jabbed.

“Don’t start.”

“What happened on Friday? You still didn’t tell me.”

“Yes, I did. I just made a drug stop for OCU. Approached the car, guy dropped his license, I got distracted, he hit me with the door, I slowed him down until the guys got there.”

“That’s the reason for all of this fanfare?”
